Before his long tenure with Lincoln Center Theater, James McMullan created a celebrated series of commercial Broadway posters commissioned by producer Alexander H. Cohen. His theatrical poster debut arrived in 1976 with Trevor Griffiths' Comedians, launching an eight-year partnership with Cohen across five distinct productions. That lineup includes the famous 1976 pre-Broadway tryout of Hellzapoppin starring Jerry Lewis, the 1977 revival of Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie starring Liv Ullmann, the 1980 musical A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine, and the 1984 production of Joanna Glass's Play Memory, directed by Harold Prince. Working on these Cohen productions brought McMullan into close collaboration with associate producer Bernard Gersten, who later appointed McMullan as Lincoln Center’s resident artist. Triton Gallery is releasing one original fine art print of each of these five Broadway shows.
