The original 1977 Broadway premiere of Charles Strouse, Martin Charnin, and Thomas Meehan’s 'Annie' stands as an epochal cultural phenomenon that permanently reshaped the modern commercial landscape, running for an astonishing 2,377 performances. Opening at the Alvin Theatre, the musical universalized Harold Gray's comic strip to deliver an absolute masterclass in golden-era musical storytelling, tracking a brave orphan girl’s journey from a dreary municipal asylum to the heights of high society. Directed by Charnin, the legendary original production achieved immortality through the unmatched performances of Andrea McArdle as Annie and Dorothy Loudon in her Tony-winning, iconic turn as the alcoholic villainess Miss Hannigan.
