Rupert Holmes’s 'The Mystery of Edwin Drood' (later billed simply as *Drood*) arrived at the Imperial Theatre in 1985, running for an astonishing 608 performances and sweeping five major Tony Awards including Best Musical. Conceived as a revolutionary, structurally brilliant achievement in lyric theater mechanics, the musical comedy transforms the arena into London's Music Hall Royale in 1892, tracking a troupe of performers who present a Dickensian cliffhanger, forcing the audience to calculate the ending. Directed by Wilford Leach for the public theater, the original company starred Betty Buckley, Cleo Laine, and George Rose.
