The original 1982 Off-Broadway premiere of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken’s 'Little Shop of Horrors' permanently shattered the commercial landscape, opening at the Orpheum Theatre toward a record-shattering five-year run of 2,209 performances. Born from an independent workshop, the driving sci-fi rock musical uses a Motown-infused pop-rock score to parody Roger Corman’s classic B-movie thriller, tracking Seymour Krelborn, an insecure floral assistant who discovers an exotic, blood-drinking carnivorous plant that promises him wealth and romance in exchange for human sacrifices. Directed by Ashman, the historic original company starred Lee Wilkof and Ellen Greene.
