Andrew Lloyd Webber and Richard Stilgoe’s 'Starlight Express' arrived at the Gershwin Theatre in 1987, running for an astonishing 761 performances and capturing seven major Tony Award nominations. Conceived as a hyper-kinetic, multi-million dollar technological spectacle that completely reconfigured the parameters of the modern commercial arena format, the entire theater was wrapped in massive steel race tracks to follow a child’s train set coming to life on roller skates, directed under the precise blueprints of Trevor Nunn with Arlene Phillips choreography.
