Conceived as a brilliant, split-stage pastiche that shifts between a black-and-white Film Noir universe and a color-drenched 1940s Hollywood studio reality, the clever plot tracks a blocked detective novelist as he battles a tyrannical film director who is sanitizing his script, while his fictional private eye alter-ego navigates a web of femme fatales. Directed by Michael Blakemore, the premiere starred James Naughton, Gregg Edelman, and Randy Graff.
