Staged at the Shubert Theatre on March 11, 1973, Sondheim: A Musical Tribute was a landmark benefit concert celebrating the early career of Stephen Sondheim. Produced by actor-producer Kurt Peterson (who created the role of Young Ben in Sondheim's Follies) alongside Craig Zadan and Neil Appelbaum, the one-night-only event was directed by Burt Shevelove.

The evening brought together over thirty legendary performers—including Angela Lansbury, Chita Rivera, Alexis Smith, Glynis Johns, Dorothy Collins, Nancy Walker, and Donna McKechnie—to perform arrangements of Sondheim’s masterworks from Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, and his classic early collaborations. Widely recognized as the prototype for all modern musical theater retrospectives, the concert was captured live on tape and famously released as the double-LP set affectionately known as the "Scrabble Album."
