The Philanthropist

Christopher Hampton’s brilliant contemporary British drawing-room comedy 'The Philanthropist' has graced the Broadway stage in various star-studded classical revivals, most famously the Roundabout Theatre Company's acclaimed 2009 revival at the American Airlines Theatre. Conceived as a razor-sharp, textually rich inversion of Molière's *The Misanthrope*, the frantic plot tracks an insecure, pathologically polite university philology professor whose academic life and marriage prospects collapse into a hilarious minefield of social double-crosses and relationship crises. Directed by David Grindley, it starred Matthew Broderick.
