Phyllis Newman and Arthur Laurents’s 'The Madwoman of Central Park West' arrived Off-Broadway at the 22 Steps Theatre in 1979, running for an astonishing multi-month commercial residency as a magnificent solo musical comedy tour-de-force drama. Conceived as a sharp, fiercely honest autobiographical monologue revue, the narrative tracks an aging, high-strung Manhattan actress and mother who locks herself inside her opulent apartment closet to analyze her anxieties, marriages, and childhood adjustments, utilizing the multi-platinum songwriting catalogs of Sondheim, Bernstein, and Kander & Ebb to score her neuroses. Directed by Laurents, it starred Newman.
