Julie Taymor’s 'The Green Bird' arrived at the Cort Theatre in 2000, bringing a visually magnificent, avant-garde theatrical extravaganza to the Broadway stage, capturing multiple major Tony nominations. Expertly adapting Carlo Gozzi’s classic 18th-century Italian commedia dell'arte fable, the brilliant, hyper-imaginative narrative tracks a pair of abandoned royal twin children who embark on a mystical picaresque odyssey to locate their true mother, navigating a surrealist landscape of talking statues, singing apples, and magical birds. Directed by Taymor with jaw-dropping puppetry and costume designs, the production featured an eclectic acoustic score, starring Albert Berman.
