The brilliant picaresque plot transposes Homer's classic epics *The Iliad* and *The Odyssey* into a satirical mid-century American landscape in the state of Washington, tracking a heroic Spanish-American War veteran soldier named Ulysses who embarks on a ten-year picaresque odyssey home, introducing the pop standard "Lazy Afternoon." Directed by Norman Lloyd, the premiere starred Kaye Ballard and Stephen Douglass.
