Budd Schulberg and Harvey Breit’s intense dramatic tragedy 'The Disenchanted' completed a celebrated Broadway premiere at the Coronet Theatre in 1958, running for 182 performances and capturing a major Tony Award. Based on Schulberg’s best-selling novel, the textually rich narrative charts Manley Halliday, a fading, deeply indebted, and severely alcoholic literary giant of the 1920s (a thinly veiled portrait of F. Scott Fitzgerald) who is hired by an ambitious young writer to collaborate on a hollow Hollywood screenplay, collapsing into tragic mental fractures. Directed by Albert Marre, the historic production famously starred Jason Robards in his Tony-winning performance.
