Neil Simon’s comic fairytale 'Fools' launched its highly publicized 1981 pre-Broadway out-of-town tryout engagement under its original working title, 'The Curse of Kulyenchikov,' at California's Buena Park Theater. The whimsical farcical plot centers on Leon Tolchinsky, an ambitious young schoolteacher who arrives in a remote, isolated Russian village to instruct a doctor's beautiful daughter, only to discover to his absolute horror that the entire town has been placed under an ancient, three-hundred-year curse that renders every resident pathologically stupid. Directed by Mike Nichols, this early staging tracks the development of the script before its premiere at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.
