Sarah Ruhl’s 'The Clean House' arrived Off-Broadway at Lincoln Center Theater’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater in 2006, standing as a brilliantly eccentric, poetic, and critically lauded masterpiece that won the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and became a Pulitzer Prize finalist. The whimsical, textually rich dark comedy unfolds inside an immaculate, sterile white living room, tracking a high-strung doctor who hires a Brazilian maid who pathologically hates cleaning, opting instead to spend her hours obsessively searching for the structurally perfect joke, collapsing into crisis when the doctor's husband falls in love with a dying patient.
