Raisin (Tour, American Theatre)

Raisin, the Tony Award-winning musical adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry’s drama A Raisin in the Sun, played on Broadway from October 18, 1973, through December 7, 1975, running for 847 performances with a key theater transfer to the ANTA Theatre (later renamed the August Wilson Theatre).  

Directed and choreographed by Donald McKayle, with a book by Robert Nemiroff and Charlotte Zaltzberg, music by Judd Woldin, and lyrics by Robert Brittan, the production follows the Younger family in 1950s Chicago as they navigate economic hardship and racial inequality. The original Broadway cast starred Virginia Capers, Joe Morton, Ernestine Jackson, and Ralph Carter. The production won two 1974 Tony Awards®, including Best Musical and Best Actress in a Musical for Virginia Capers.
