Gary Geld, Peter Udell, and Ossie Davis’s 'Purlie' went on tour after its astonishing 688 performance run at the Broadway Theatre in 1970, which captured multiple major Tony Awards. Based on Davis’s celebrated civil rights satirical masterpiece play *Purlie Victorious*, the high-octane musical comedy follows Purlie Judson, an eccentric, fast-talking Black preacher who orchestrates a frantic campaign of deceptions and strategic double-crosses to reclaim a rural church inheritance and liberate cotton pickers from a tyrannical plantation boss. Directed by Philip Rose.
