Horwitt’s 'Make Mine Manhattan' brought a grand-scale, tap-dancing musical revue extravaganza to the Broadhurst Theatre in 1948, running for an astonishing 448 performances and permanently establishing a high-water mark for mid-century variety showmanship. Completely discarding traditional linear book structures, the fast-paced farcical production launches a savage satirical attack on the eccentricities, rent panics, and high-stakes hustles of Manhattan urban life, executing sketches mocking the subways and Hollywood divas. Directed by Hassard Short, the historic original Broadway cast famously launched a young Sid Caesar into stardom.
