Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse’s classic American comedy masterpiece 'Life with Father' permanently altered the commercial stage landscape during its historic 1939 premiere at the Empire Theatre, running for an astonishing, record-shattering 3,224 performances to become the longest-running non-musical play in Broadway history. The textually rich family narrative unfolds inside an opulent Madison Avenue brownstone in the 1880s, tracking Clarence Day, a fiercely conservative, dictatorial Wall Street broker who rules his household with rigid financial over-analysis, collapsing into a hilarious domestic panic when his independent wife demands he be baptized. Directed by Bretaigne Windust, the premiere starred Lindsay.
