Jean Anouilh’s lyrical romantic tragedy 'Legend of Lovers' (adapted by Kitty Black) completed a celebrated original Broadway premiere run at the Plymouth Theatre in 1951, running for an accomplished commercial residency under the banner of the Playwrights' Company. The textually rich, non-linear dramatic mosaic transposes the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice into a dreary mid-century European railway station, tracking a sensitive young street musician and a beautiful, disillusioned actress who forge a passionate romance to escape their family downfalls, collapsing into crisis when death intervenes. Directed by Peter Ashmore, it starred Richard Burton.
