The sharp, politically charged plot unfolds inside the provincial colony of New Amsterdam in 1647, tracking a rebellious young anti-authoritarian citizen who faces execution, collapsing into farcical complications when the dictatorial, peg-legged Dutch governor Peter Stuyvesant arrives to enforce strict laws, introducing the standard "September Song." Directed by Joshua Logan, the premiere starred Walter Huston.
