Arthur Laurents’s whimsical 1960 Broadway romantic comedy 'Invitation to a March' completed a celebrated premiere run at the Music Box Theatre, running for an accomplished 113 performances. Set within a hyper-stylized summer beach house in Long Island, the textually rich plot centers on Normandy Forbush, a wealthy, high-strung young heiress who pathologically falls into deep narcoleptic sleep whenever her family pressures her into a conventional, corporate marriage of security, magically awakened by a care-free local plumber. Directed by Laurents with an original incidental music score by Stephen Sondheim, the production starred Shelley Winters and Jane Fonda.
