Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart’s 'I Married an Angel' brought an opulent, grand-scale musical comedy fantasy to the Shubert Theatre in 1938, running for an astonishing 338 performances and permanently establishing a high-water mark for the songwriting duo. Featuring a witty book by George Abbott based on János Vaszary’s play, the whimsical plot follows a deeply cynical, wealthy Budapest banker who vows he will only marry an actual angel, collapsing into farcical chaos when a beautiful, real-life celestial angel materializes to marry him, losing her wings through human corruption. Directed by Abbott with balletic choreography by George Balanchine, the original production starred Dennis King and Vera Zorina.
