Todd Kreidler’s 'Holler If You Hear Me' arrived at the Palace Theatre in 2014 as one of the most culturally radical, politically urgent, and highly debated contemporary landmarks of the decade. Conceived as a grand-scale, entirely through-sung hip-hop opera, the narrative completely bypassed traditional golden-era formatting to utilize the raw, multi-platinum poetry and rap catalog of music icon Tupac Shakur. Set inside a gritty, systemic inner-city block, the visceral plot follows John, a young Black man fresh out of federal prison who struggles to escape gang warfare and achieve economic independence. Directed with relentless kinetic tension by Kenny Leon, the production starred Saul Williams.
