Jule Styne, Ben Hecht, and Bob Hilliard’s 'Hazel Flagg' brought a brassy, grand-scale musical comedy extravaganza to the Mark Hellinger Theatre in 1953, running for an accomplished 190 performances. Based on Hecht's own classic cinematic screenplay *Nothing Sacred*, the fast-paced satirical plot follows Hazel Flagg, an ordinary young woman from a dreary Vermont village who is mistakenly diagnosed with terminal radium poisoning, capitalizing on a wealthy magazine tycoon's offer to receive a luxurious, all-expenses-paid final dream vacation to Manhattan, becoming an overnight media sensation. Directed by David Alexander with legendary choreography by Robert Alton, the original production starred Helen Gallagher.
