The breathless plot transposes the biblical Book of Job into a contemporary, hyper-realistic mansion in wealthy Oyster Bay, Long Island, tracking Joe Benjamin, a deeply religious, multi-millionaire manufacturer who refuses to renounce his faith even when a bizarre, trench-coated messenger from the Almighty unleashes a domino effect of fires, bankruptcies, and physical afflictions upon his family. Directed by Michael Bennett, the original cast was led by Vincent Gardenia and Charles Nelson Reilly.
