Conceived as an explosive, hyper-kinetic, and politically urgent concert biography, the rock musical turns the entire theater into the "Afrika Shrine," a smoky Lagos nightclub in 1977 where Nigerian afrobeat pioneer and political activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti stages a defiant, real-time performance on the eve of his government-enforced exile, using his music to skewer military corruption and colonialism. Directed and choreographed with breathtaking athletic precision by Bill T. Jones, the premiere starred Sahr Ngaujah.
