Paul Foster’s eccentric 1972 Broadway avant-garde historical piece 'Elizabeth I' completed a short-lived run of 5 performances at the historic Lyceum Theatre, remaining a highly sought-after rarity for scholars tracking the counter-cultural stage scene. Conceived as an anarchic street play within a play, the farcical plot follows a troupe of impoverished Renaissance actors who travel through an English village to stage a broad lampoon of Queen Elizabeth's strategic political calculations, her rivalries with Mary Queen of Scots, and the Spanish Armada. Directed by John Heifner, the production starred Penelope Windust and Richard Ramos.
