Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, and Peter Duchan’s emotionally raw musical 'Dogfight' arrived Off-Broadway at Second Stage Theatre in 2012, capturing the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical. Set in San Francisco on November 21, 1963, the narrative tracks three young Marine recruits who orchestrate a cruel, traditional "dogfight" competition to recruit the least attractive dates to a party for a cash payout before shipping out to the Vietnam War. The plot shifts dramatically when an rowdy recruit named Eddie meets Rose, an idealistic, plain diner waitress who transforms his cynical moral compass through her capacity for empathy. Directed by Joe Mantello, the production starred Derek Klena and Lindsay Mendez in a breakout performance.
