Maury Yeston, Peter Stone, and Thomas Meehan’s 'Death Takes a Holiday' arrived Off-Broadway at the Roundabout Theatre Company’s Laura Pels Theatre in 2011 as an elegant, deeply moving highlight of the musical season. Translating Alberto Casella’s classic 1924 Italian play into a lush, operatic pop-opera landscape, the romantic narrative tracks the literal personification of Death, who chooses to adopt the physical body of a handsome Russian prince for a brief, three-day holiday in an Italian villa to understand human grief, falling into a star-crossed romance with a beautiful young woman. Directed by Doug Hughes, the stellar production starred Julian Ovenden and Linda Balgord.
