Ad van Dijk and Koen van Dijk’s 'Cyrano: The Musical' brought a grand-scale, entirely through-composed European musical epic to the Neil Simon Theatre in 1993, running for a triumphant 137 performances after a record-shattering run in the Netherlands. Translating Edmond Rostand’s classic verse romance into a lush, symphonic pop-opera landscape, the narrative tracks the tragic, brilliant poet-soldier Cyrano as he battles a corrupt court and utilizes his poetic genius to ghostwrite romantic letters for a handsome cadet to woo his beautiful cousin Roxane. Directed with visual scale by Eddy Habbema, the lavish original Broadway production starred Bill van Dijk in a tour-de-force performance alongside Anne Runolfsson.
