John Kander, Fred Ebb, Rupert Holmes, and Peter Stone’s 'Curtains' brought a high-octane, multi-Tony-nominated backstage musical mystery comedy to the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in 2007, running for a triumphant 511 performances. Set in a pre-Broadway 1959 Boston tryout theater, the plot ignites when the talentless, widely loathed leading lady of a new musical is mysteriously murdered during the opening-night curtain call, forcing Lieutenant Frank Cioffi—a deadpan police detective who is secretly an obsessive musical-theater fan—to lock down the building and systematically solve the crime while extensively rewriting the show's musical numbers. Directed by Scott Ellis, the production starred David Hyde Pierce in a Tony-winning turn.
