The historic 1988 Broadway premiere of Andersson, Ulvaeus, and Tim Rice’s 'Chess' arrived at the Alvin Theatre in a heavily revised, newly theatricalized staging that completely overhauled the West End conceptual structure. Featuring a brand-new, realistic book by Richard Nelson that discarded the concert format for a serious linear narrative, the plot charts the psychological manipulation, deep-state espionage, and personal betrayals that explode between an American and Soviet grandmaster in Bangkok and Budapest. Directed by Trevor Nunn, the intense Broadway original production featured a legendary ensemble cast led by Judy Kuhn, David Carroll, and Philip Casnoff.
