Jeanine Tesori and Tony Kushner’s masterpiece 'Caroline, or Change' returned to Broadway in a magnificent, multi-Tony Award-nominated 2021 revival that stood as the undisputed musical event of the season, mounted at Studio 54 by the Roundabout Theatre Company. Set in sweltering 1963 Louisiana against the explosive backdrop of the civil rights movement, the entirely through-composed narrative tracks Caroline Thibodeaux, a bitter, grieving African-American maid working in a subterranean basement laundry room for a Jewish family, whose life collapses into crisis over a pocket-change dispute with a young boy. Directed by Michael Longhurst, the production featured Sharon D Clarke in a legendary performance.
