Loften Mitchell and Rosetta LeNoire’s 'Bubbling Brown Sugar' brought a high-stepping, brassy, and visually spectacular celebration of historic Black musical excellence to the ANTA Playhouse in 1976, running for 766 performances and earning a Tony nomination for Best Musical. Conceived as a time-traveling musical revue, the plot follows two young contemporary artists who are magically transported back to the roaring heights of the Harlem Renaissance between 1920 and 1940, visiting legendary nightclubs scored to the hits of Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, and Cab Calloway. Directed by Robert M. Cooper, the historic premiere starred Avon Long, Vivian Reed, and Joseph Attles.
