Laurence O'Keefe, Keythe Farley, and Brian Flemming’s 'Bat Boy: The Musical' arrived Off-Broadway at the Union Square Theatre in 2001 as an explosive, hyper-energetic, and campy cult masterpiece that perfectly adapted a sensational Weekly World News tabloid headline. The plot tracks a half-boy, half-bat creature discovered inside a remote West Virginia cave who is taken in by a local veterinarian's family, quickly learning to speak and dress like a refined gentleman, only to face a wall of narrow-minded bigotry, mass hysteria, and a horrifying family secret from the local townspeople. Directed by Mark Wing-Davey with rock choreography by Anthony Powell, the production starred Deven May and Kerry Butler.
