The plot centers on Rich, a young New York fiction writer who is diagnosed with the disease at the terrifying, politically cold dawn of the crisis, tracking his unexpected emotional reconciliation with his estranged former lover, Saul, who chooses to become his primary caregiver against a wall of societal panic. Directed by Marshall W. Mason for the Circle Repertory Company before transferring to the Lyceum Theatre in 1985, the historic production starred Jonathan Hadary and Michael Rupert.
