Masterfully translated and adapted by George Tabori, the plot transposes the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party into a gritty, comic-book version of 1930s Chicago, tracking a small-time, unctuous racketeer named Arturo Ui as he systematically colonizes the city's cauliflower trade through extortion, arson, and murder. Directed by Tony Richardson with a jazz-infused score by Jule Styne, the production achieved historic status due to Christopher Plummer’s monumental, physically virtuosic lead performance as Ui.
