The short-lived and highly ambitious 1971 Broadway musical adaptation of Leon Uris's best-selling epic historical novel Exodus opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre. Featuring a sweeping, dramatic orchestral score by Walt Smith and a book and lyrics written directly by Leon Uris himself, the grand-scale production tracks Ari Ben Canaan, a fierce, charismatic Haganah operative who orchestrates a daring, illegal rescue mission to smuggle hundreds of Jewish Holocaust survivors out of a British detention camp on Cyprus aboard a cargo ship bound for Palestine, starring David Cryer and Constance Towers.
