The legendary and opulent 1961 musical comedy 'Anatol' infamously collapsed during its out-of-town tryout at Boston's Shubert Theatre, failing to reach its scheduled Broadway premiere. Featuring music by Jean Schwartz and lyrics by Fay Kanin, the musical adapted Arthur Schnitzler’s classic 1893 episodic vignette play about a wealthy, deeply neurotic Viennese playboy who bounces from one romantic entanglement to another in turn-of-the-century Austria, desperately searching for an idealized woman. Directed by Ezra Stone, the short-lived production starred Jean-Pierre Aumont alongside a star-studded ensemble.
