Discarding traditional linear musical comedy tracking to construct a serious, through-composed "concept musical" long before the term existed, the narrative traces the first thirty-five years of Joseph Taylor Jr., a small-town doctor's son, as he struggles to preserve his idealistic moral compass against the corrupting materialism of big-city high society. Directed and choreographed with cinematic fluidity by Agnes de Mille utilizing a bare stage, a Greek chorus, and multimedia projections, the historic original production starred John Battles and Annamary Dickey.
