Jay Kuo and Marc Acito’s deeply moving, historically urgent musical 'Allegiance' marks a significant milestone on Broadway as the first major production to directly confront the tragic history of the Japanese-American internment camps during World War II. Inspired by the real-life childhood experiences of cultural icon George Takei, the narrative moves between the present day and the dusty barracks of the Heart Mountain Relocation Center in Wyoming, tracking the profound ideological fractures within the Kimura family as they fight for citizenship, dignity, and survival in a nation that has branded them enemies. Opening at the Longacre Theatre in 2015 under the direction of Stafford Arima, the production starred Takei, Lea Salonga, and Telly Leung.
