Christopher Durang and composer Peter Melnick’s 'Adrift in Macao' is a delightfully silly, tongue-in-cheek musical parody of the sultry, shadowy world of 1940s Film Noir. Set inside a smoky, dangerous nightclub in the exotic Far East in 1952, the plot follows an eccentric collection of characters—including a mysterious American ex-pat on the run, a cynical lounge singer, and a sinister club owner named Mitch—as they trade rapid-fire hardboiled clichés, navigate shifting double-crosses, and break into hilarious pastiche numbers. Directed by Sheryl Kaller for Primary Stages at the 59E59 Theaters in 2007, the Off-Broadway production starred Alan Mingo Jr., Rachel de Benedet, and Orville Mendoza.
